Micrima win innovation award from Medilink South West.
Members of the South West Life Science and Healthcare community celebrated the achievements of the sector last night at the Medilink SW 2016 Business & Innovation Awards, held in Bristol. There were 5 awards and Micrima were pleased to be awarded the Innovation Award for 2017 beating many exciting innovations for this prestigious award. The award was collected by Dr Peter Bannister, CTO and Elizabeth Blake, Marketing manager who thanked Medilink, their investors and the diligent work of the Micrima employees in the development of this innovation.
Medilink recognised this innovation due in part to the huge implication of Breast cancer to patients and the healthcare system. Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of death in women between the ages of 35 and 55 in Europe, and the leading cause of death in many countries. Early diagnosis dramatically improves survival rates, yet today’s screening, based on X-rays, detects only the minority of all tumours. Most tumours are discovered by the women themselves, often at a much later stage than ideal for the most effective treatment. This is, in part, due to the difficulty that X-ray mammography (XRM) has in discriminating between cancers and dense tissue, particularly in young women. XRM misses every other cancer in dense breast tissue.
